Should Teens Get Laser Hair Removal?

By

When I announced my fifth-grade desire to start shaving my legs, my mother’s protective wisdom was that I put it off as long as possible. Once you start, she explained, you can never stop. Stubble — which is more unpleasant than blonde tween fur — will come and keep coming until you die. I stole my dad’s Bic and jumped on the hamster wheel.

But the advent of laser hair removal has inverted the teen hair-removal equation. The sooner have your follicles obliterated by a beam of concentrated light, the more hours of your life you might reclaim for pursuits more stimulating than shaving and waxing. And as laser hair removal gets cheaper and more convenient (especially in New York, where you don’t need to be a doctor to do it), the rites and humiliation of puberty remain pretty much the same. Once a pricy last resort for teen girls bullied for their mustaches, laser hair removal is now a plausible first choice for young women finding hair in new places. But is it actually a good idea?

Children’s fashion designer Bonnie Young suspects that some of her tween models have already been lasered and for that, she’s grateful. “Nobody wants to see a photograph with hair all over their legs,” she told the Cut. But when her own 13-year-old daughter came home recently asking for laser hair removal for herself — and reporting (as 13-year-olds do) that everyone at her downtown Manhattan school is getting it — Young had mixed feelings, specifically about the safety.

Used improperly, the lasers can cause disfiguring burns. But in the hands of a physician (for whom, alas, there is no Lifebooker deal), it’s safe at all ages. Dermatologist and clinical researcher Dr. Macrene Alexiades-Armenakas told the Cut that her own 15-year-old daughter hasn’t shown any interest, but “the moment she says the word, she can be zapped!” In Dr. Alexiades-Armenakas’s experience, laser hair removal is well-tolerated in older teenagers; in other words, they won’t back out once the — admittedly uncomfortable — procedure has begun. Treating someone in the 12, 13, 14 age range requires making sure the child isn’t being coerced by her parents and is “mature enough to understand that this is a means to an end.” But Dr. Alexiades-Armenakas says that when parents bring in children as young as 10 or 11, she advises them to wait.

My friend, whom I’ll call Sally, was that child. When she was 11, her mother took her to get her eyebrows lasered — it was one of the many beauty treatments she purchased for herself in bulk and shared with Sally and her little sister. It didn’t make her any more or less self-conscious, Sally told me, to learn at such a young age that her eyebrows were “wrong” and correct them with laser hair removal. It did, however, bore her. “I was like, 'Why do I have to go sit in that chair after school?' But it wasn’t traumatizing.” (What was traumatizing, she said, was the chemical peel that turned her face purple: “It was right before this important, for me, Jewish youth retreat where this guy was going to be that I was flirting with.”) Of course, Sally got lucky in that her mom preferred then-unfashionable Brooke Shields–brows to the thin arches of the '00s, and so Sally held onto her thick eyebrows through their fashion renaissance.

This is the true risk of laser hair removal: It’s permanent. Our feelings about body hair, less so. In fact, a woman’s beauty regimen is rarely more masochistic than immediately post-puberty. No one would allow a teen to make her raccoon eyeliner and flat-ironed hair permanent. Is body hair so different? Second only to passé brows, in terms of regret risk, is a passé bush.

Because laser hair removal works best where the hair is darkest and the skin is lightest, Dr. Alexiades-Armenakas said, pubic-hair removal is very permanent. She’s had to talk women out of the landing strips. Cameron Diaz, of all people, is on a similar mission. She advised women against lasering their pubes in The Body Book. “The idea that vaginas are preferable in a hairless state is a pretty recent phenomenon,” she wrote, “and all fads change, people.” And by some measures, hairless vaginas are already on the way out.

I too have dialed back grooming from the extreme waxes I got in high school, back when I would drive myself to a downtown salon where nobody’s mom went. I’m so grateful lasering wasn’t an option. I didn’t see the “full-bush Brazilian” on the horizon, and I definitely could not have imagined the extent to which I would stop caring.

Is it so crazy to hope the same might one day be true for leg and armpit hair? That the “normcore of pubes” heralds the resurgence of all female body hair? That one day women with smooth legs will look as oppressed as women with corset-waists? Laser hair removal, like a permanent beauty treatment, asks women to weigh the likelihood of a total overthrow of a beauty norm against the cost of adhering to it, even minimally, over the course of a lifetime.

For now, Young and her daughter settled on leg-waxing as a compromise, but she’s not losing any sleep over the permanence of laser hair removal, to which she will relent once her daughter is old enough to follow the rules about sun exposure pre-procedure. "I don’t mind that leg-hair removal is permanent,” she said. “I think that’s a good idea." Although the overhead for laser hair removal is steep, for now it seems unfortunately likely to pay off in time saved and money not spent on waxes and razors. If I were a teen today, I would get that shit lasered off before my parents cut me off.

Can You Zap Your Way to Hair-Free Legs at Home?

A friend with a tendency to stay up late watching infomercials asked me whether at-home laser hair removal actually works. It's no wonder she was curious: Never having to shave or wax again—with no ingrowns, no bumps, and no stubble—sounds almost too good to be true. It's why laser hair-removal gadgets were the first kind of at-home beauty devices that anyone really got excited about. But the earliest ones were mostly letdowns: They took forever to work and delivered only so-so results. But in good news for infomercial junkies, there's a new generation that claims to be better.

The best ones work like professional lasers. Dermatologists say that the Tria Hair Removal Laser (which uses something called a diode laser) has the most science behind it. Like many professional lasers, it works only on dark hair and fair skin. “It damages stem cells in the hair follicle,” says Neil Sadick, a dermatologist in New York City.

They require lots of patience. Lasers can take months to yield results. “It slowly thins out hair," says Sadick, adding there's no guarantee that the laser will kill each and every stem cell responsible for hair growth in an area. "You may or may not ever achieve total hairlessness.”

They work better on some areas than others. Thin skin—above the lip, in the armpits, and along the bikini line—tends to get smoothest, fastest, says Sadick.

They hurt. We put the Tria to the test, and be forewarned: Each session feels like a rubber band snapping against your skin. But our brave tester used it once every two weeks on her armpits and kept going for three months until they were totally hairless. She now does touch-ups every month or so. Each underarm takes about five minutes. If you want to tackle your legs, count on about an hour each.

Dr. Ran Y. Rubinstein Introduces New Advanced Laser Hair Removal Treatment

Cynosure Apogee Elite is one of the most effective laser hair removal treatments available.

Dr. Ran Y. Rubinstein, one of New York’s most respected facial plastic surgeons, has introduced a new state-of-the-art laser hair removal treatment to his practice designed to achieve superior results in patients. The treatment, Cynosure Apogee Elite, has proven to be one of the most effective laser hair removal treatments available today.
Dr. Ran Y. Rubinstein

According to Dr. Rubinstein, Cynosure Apogee Elite laser hair removal is effective because it contains both the Alexandrite and Long Pulsed YAG lasers in the same system. This allows his staff to switch lasers back and forth based upon the skin type and unique needs of patients.

Cynosure Apogee Elite is ideal for removing hair efficiently in both men and women. Dr. Rubinstein said the most popular hair removal areas his team treats in women are facial hair, under arms, the bikini area, and legs. The most popular areas of treatment for men are the back and the chest.

Dr. Rubinstein explained the differences between Cynosure Apogee Elite and similar procedures offered by other plastic surgeons are quality, value, and the highly specialized care his staff provides patients. He said patients that seek laser hair removal from high volume discount spas, skin care clinics, or plastic surgeons that use substandard laser technologies typically do not achieve the best results possible and can place the patient at higher risk for potential complications such as burns and skin color changes. Dr. Rubinstein further cautions to avoid clinics that rent their lasers as they are often out of date and inferior devices. In addition, laser hair removal procedures are frequently performed by technicians that accompany the lasers and not the clinic's own staff or physicians.
“What one thinks is a bargain often ends up being much more costly because these inferior lasers often require many more treatments to achieve satisfactory results. Some of these laser clinics end up going out of business leaving their clients without any recourse,” said Dr. Rubinstein.

All treatments are supervised by Dr. Rubinstein further ensuring optimal and safe outcomes.

Furthermore, only highly skilled and trained medical staff perform all laser hair removal services at Dr. Rubinstein’s office including Marissa Martinez, a medical esthetician, who has worked with Dr. Rubinstein for four years and has more than 10 years of experience. She trained with some of the top physicians in her field and works diligently to keep up-to-date on the latest skin care technologies. Lisa Thayer, who is a nurse practitioner for Dr. Rubinstein’s practice, joins Martinez in administering laser hair removal services. Lisa Thayer joined the practice in 2012 and was has trained by Dr. Rubinstein who has trained hundreds of cosmetic physicians and nurse practitioners on laser treatments and injectables.

Dr. Rubinstein is double board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and the American Board of Facial Plastic Surgery. He is a member of the American Society for Laser Medicine & Surgery. Additionally, Dr. Rubinstein is an assistant professor at Columbia-New York Presbyterian Hospital where he is passionate about training young facial plastic surgeons for their future careers.

Based in Newburgh, New York, Dr. Rubinstein is an expert in facial plastic surgery & laser procedures and only offers the best technology for all procedures including Fraxel fractional laser treatments for skin resurfacing, and CoolSculpting to remove stubborn fat. Dr. Rubinstein is sought out for his Rhinoplasty techniques and state-of-the-art certified surgical suite.

Laser hair removal can be a safe treatment

Is laser hair removal safe?

When performed by a dermatologist, laser hair removal is safe and effective. When done by inexperienced practitioners, laser hair removal can be dangerous. Burns, permanent changes to skin color and scars can result.

Advances in laser medicine in recent years have made it possible for people who were considered poor candidates in the past to have effective treatment today. However, laser hair removal must be performed very carefully. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that anyone considering laser hair removal consult a board- certified dermatologist.

Who chooses laser hair removal?

People who no longer are willing to shave, pluck or wax body parts, people who have uncomfortable skin reactions from removing unwanted hair and people with excessive hair growth are choosing laser techniques.

What can lasers remove?

Lasers designed for hair removal can be used on most parts of the body and are effective in treating large areas of the body. Common laser hair removal requests include the face, especially the upper lip and chin, back, bikini area, chest, neck, shoulders and legs.

What is the process?

For the procedure, the area to be treated is cleansed and, depending on the location, sometimes a topical anesthetic is needed.

The laser removes hair by vaporizing it, causing heating to the bulb of the hair follicle and destruction of the hair. Patients describe the laser pulses as a feeling of warm pinpricks or a rubber band being gently snapped against the skin. The length of treatment depends on the size of the area: an upper lip takes minutes while the entire back can take more than an hour. You can expect a 40 to 50 percent reduction in hair after the first treatment, and you will see the results immediately.

Successive treatments will increase the hair reduction. Most patients remain hair free for months or even years. When it regrows, patients have noticeably less hair, which is finer and lighter in color. Laser hair removal can be repeated when growth reappears.

How long is recuperation?

Following treatment, you will need to prevent exposure of the treated area from direct sunlight, tanning beds, sun lamps or other tanning equipment. You may have some redness and swelling. Most people return to their everyday activities immediately after treatment.

Does insurance cover it?

Insurance generally does not cover laser hair removal as a cosmetic procedure, but may cover it if there is medical reason for it. Insurance coverage varies widely, so check with your provider.

Jeffrey Smith is a dermatologist at Sanford Dermatology, located at the Sanford North Clinic in Bismarck. Amerejuve MedSpa Stresses Summer Safety for Laser Hair Removal in Houston

Houston, TX (PRWEB) July 10, 2014

Sun protection and safety is always important in the summer, but that goes double for men and women getting Houston laser hair removal treatments.

Statistically, complications for laser hair removal and intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment increase during the summer months. Small laser hair removal providers may not remember or realize to check the medical and technical issues that can cause these complications. Amerejuve MedSpa, with 10 locations in the Houston area all staffed by state certified technicians, is careful to follow these important safety guidelines.

For example, a person who is on photosensitizing medication or antibiotics should never receive a laser hair removal treatment while actively taking the medication. Amerejuve also checks on the client’s skin products, some of which may react to the treatment. A reputable MedSpa would also never perform laser hair removal on a client who is pregnant, as the effects of laser hair removal on pregnancy have not been adequately studied to ensure safety.

“Safety is a top priority at our clinics. That’s why we have gold standard equipment, and all of our technicians are certified and required to take continuing education courses and training,” said Vincent Chitolie, Amerejuve COO.

Laser hair removal is a safe procedure when performed correctly by experienced staff with FDA-approved equipment. Amerejuve has all of the above, and more. While there are many reasons to choose Amerejuve for laser hair removal in Houston, below are five of the most popular.

1. Attention to Laser Hair Removal Safety
Amerejuve is careful to confirm information to ensure every client has a safe, effective treatment. Amerejuve strives to educate clients about services and at-home care, and this knowledge is vital to any successful laser hair removal or MedSpa session.

2. Competitive Laser Hair Removal Pricing
Amerejuve uses top-of-the-line laser hair removal equipment from Syneron and Candela, but at prices much lower than other providers. American Laser, Sona MedSpa, Ideal Image, and others charge significantly more for the same service on the same quality of equipment.

3. Excellent Customer Service
Amerejuve’s clients often share their experiences online, providing numerous examples of Amerejuve’s caring, service-oriented culture. Amerejuve’s clinics have top ratings on review sites such as Google, CitySearch, Facebook, and DemandForce.

4. Convenient Locations
Amerejuve MedSpa has 10 locations throughout the greater Houston area, which makes it easy to attend treatments close to work, home, or both. Clinics are also open six days a week to offer maximum flexibility in appointment times.

5. Flexible Treatment Options for Laser Hair Removal
Every Amerejuve clinic is equipped to perform laser hair removal on any skin tone. Alexandrite lasers work best for lighter skin tones, while Nd: YAG is best for darker skin tones. Amerejuve ensures every client can be placed on a laser designed specifically to treat their skin tone, making for safer, more effective results.

To schedule a free consultation for any Amerejuve service, call (713) 960-6262.

Quinn Clinics’ Guide to Shopping for Laser Hair Removal

Bristol (PRWEB UK) 30 June 2014

Laser hair removal is now one of the most popular non-invasive treatments in the UK, with more and more people discovering the benefits of permanent hair reduction. The increase in demand has inevitably led to a wider range of suppliers in the market with some offering very attractive prices, yet all laser hair removal is not the same.

Skin expert Dr. John Quinn, founder of professional skin treatment business, Quinn Clinics, is warning patients to choose their hair removal system and provider with care, and to help them make the right choice, has created a comprehensive Guide to Shopping for Laser Hair Removal in order to explain the options so that patients can make safe and informed decisions.

Dr. John Quinn, founder and medical director of Quinn Clinics, explains:

“The appeal of laser hair removal is now quite widely understood â€" permanent hair reduction means that people have smoother, healthier skin without the need to shave daily.”

“However, there is a plethora of laser hair removal systems available. These have differing features which can affect results depending on the individual’s own colouring and requirements as well as the skill of the laser therapist. It is really important for patients to make the right choice.”

The bewildering array of technology is certainly one of the more confusing areas for those considering laser hair removal. Quinn Clinics’ Guide to Shopping for Laser Hair Removal breaks this down into a simple explanation of the two main systems â€" laser and IPL (intense pulsed light) â€" explaining how they actually work in non-technical language. The Guide also includes a very helpful 10-point comparison of the advantages of laser vs IPL.

Dr. John Quinn continues:

“Safety should also be a big concern for anybody choosing laser hair removal. Some systems are simply less likely to cause problems than others. Understanding this is important in a market where people are increasingly tempted to shop around on price alone.”

“In addition, there is no legal requirement for practitioners or clinics/salons to be trained or registered in any way, but we help patients understand exactly what to look for in choosing a laser hair removal provider.”

“By explaining the choices and giving patients advice about their options, we hope that people are able to use the information to understand their options and make the right decision for them.”

Quinn Clinics is an independent, doctor-led company with skin clinics based in Bristol and London. Both clinics offer laser hair removal with highly trained therapists. They will shortly be offering a choice of technologies. The latest addition is the new Candela elōs Plus with Motif - a pain-free laser hair removal system â€" which complements their existing Lumenis machine, which works on a very broad spectrum of hair type and skin colour combinations. Quinn Clinics is the first and only company in Bristol to offer these advanced treatments.

Although many competitors charge for a consultation, Quinn Clinics offer a free appointment with a skin test to enable patients to assess the treatment without any cost or obligation.

Quinn Clinics also have a separate website http://www.bristollaserhairremoval.co.uk dedicated to those looking for the treatment.

The company enjoys an excellent reputation for customer service and has won a number of awards to reflect this. Both the London and Bristol clinics are fully registered with the CQC and have passed inspections with flying colours.

Quinn Clinics offer an unusually extensive range of cosmetic and medical skin treatments including popular anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers and lip filler treatments. The clinics are equipped with the latest advanced skin treatment technology, including IPL, laser, CO2 and Pelleve radio frequency. They also tackle medical skin issues including acne, rosacea, thread veins and excessive sweating.

Laser Hair Removal in Tampa, FL at TLC Aesthetics

Tampa, FL (PRWEB) June 13, 2014

TLC Aesthetics is spearheaded by Dr. Charles Talakkottur, M.D. and we are pleased to announce laser hair removal for the entire Tampa, Florida area. Laser hair removal can be safely and effectively performed on most hair types with the exception of blonde, gray, and red hair. Unfortunately these hair colors don’t respond well to any laser in the world. TLC Aesthetics has the latest technology to perform laser hair removal on all skin colors and all body areas.

Laser hair removal is a process and requires more than just one treatment. Perhaps a more justified name is laser hair reduction as it is impossible to remove 100% of the hair but there is a significant reduction after about 5-7 treatments spaced weeks apart, depending on the hair that is targeted. Since hair grows in phases: growth, recession and a dormant type phase, it is essential to capture the hair during the growth and dormancy phases.

TLC Aesthetics is the leader in cosmetic treatments in Tampa Bay. Dr. Charles Talakkottur has been featured in many newspapers, magazines and TV including but not limited to CBS, NBC, and Univision. TLC Aesthetics performs many cosmetic treatments including botox, dermal fillers, scar reduction, stem cell therapy and the Vampire Facelift®. Look Young Atlanta: Atlanta Laser Hair Removal Clinic Discovers Shocking New Trend Among Summer Customers

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) June 05, 2014

Women are getting hip to the money-saving benefits of laser hair removal. In their spa located in Midtown, Atlanta, Look Young Atlanta has been seeing a stunning increase in business. It seems the change has to do with the economy picking back up and customers looking to save money on expenses that they consider wasteful. Owner, Jodi Bell says, "They are abandoning their razors in droves, and joining the laser hair removal revolution as a way to save both time and money."

Over a lifetime, women spend more than $10,000 buying razors, creams, gels and other types of shaving products. The cost of the products is not the only thing crushing bank accounts across the nation. The 50 billion liters of combined water use also cost women big. When a person evaluates hair removal in terms of lifetime benefits, it is clear that laser treatment is a better investment.

Surveys by the American Academy of Plastic Surgeons suggests that the number of women turning to laser hair removal is on the rise. Women are no longer sitting on the sidelines and accepting razors as the “normal” way of getting rid of hair. They are crunching the numbers and realizing that laser treatments are more cost-effective.

Laser treatments cost less than half of what a year’s worth of shaving costs. The difference is that laser hair removal is permanent. Once a woman pays the upfront fee for the service, she reaps the rewards of a hairless body without ever having to shell out another dime. Shaving, however, is only temporary. A woman who wants to stay hairless with this method has to continuously pay the hefty $10,000 a year price tag.

It’s not just about the money. The time commitment associated with shaving is an issue too. The average woman shaves about 12 times per month and spends about 10 minutes per session. Over a year’s time, these numbers add up. The resource of time is just as valuable as money. The sad thing about time is that once it’s lost, there is no way to earn it back.

Laser hair removal is a one-time procedure. Once the hair is removed from an area of the body, it’s gone for good. There is no maintenance needed to maintain the results. A woman can spend the next 50 plus years of life never worrying about shaving another patch of hair off her body.

Imagine how freeing it would feel to never have to search the couch cushions again trying to find stray dollars to buy a new razor blade. Imagine never having to dash to the store after a hard day’s work just to grab a can of shaving gel. The money and time saved over the course of a year can be put to better use. The value of both could easily add up to a tropical vacation.

The infographic on Look Young Atlanta’s website succinctly sums up the time and cost commitment involved in manual hair removal. Check it out here.

Dallas Dermatologist Pioneers Use of New Laser Hair Removal System

DALLAS, TX--(Marketwired - Jun 2, 2014) - Dr. Martin Kassir, a leading dermatologist in the greater Dallas area, is the first doctor in North America to launch the use of a powerful new laser hair reduction system, Synchro REPLA:Y. With this innovative laser, Dr. Kassir is able to offer his patients fast, effective, and well-tolerated hair reduction.

With the Synchro REPLA:Y system, Dr. Kassir can deliver long-term or permanent hair reduction on any type of skin. The heart of the system lies in the powerful combination of two specialized lasers. The fast, precise energy from these lasers enables Dr. Kassir to successfully deliver a broad range of treatments on dark skin, fair skin, or ethnic skin. This type of performance cannot be duplicated by any other individual wavelength laser on today's market.

"I like to pay special attention to emerging aesthetic technology," commented Dr. Kassir. "I often hear about new 'advanced' lasers, but they ultimately turn out to be inferior to the devices I already use. But when I heard about Synchro REPLA:Y, I was especially excited because it has so many features in a single system. This laser is a real advancement in terms of laser hair reduction. It's fast and reliable -- the top two things my patients want from a hair removal system."

Studies estimate that the demand for this type of treatment will increase almost 14 percent in 2014, ending with nearly 2.45 million patient sessions. Many of these potential patients have already contacted Dr. Kassir since he is currently the only dermatologist in North America to be able to offer the advanced laser technology of Synchro REPLA:Y to his patients.

"Laser hair reduction has been a popular treatment in the past, but with this new advanced system, I think its popularity will be off the charts," said Dr. Kassir. "This system is really the only way for patients to get away from the complaints associated with traditional hair reduction. It's faster and more powerful, with the ability to micro-tune treatment to the patient's unique skincare needs. In essence, it just works more efficiently."

About Dr. Martin Kassir M.D., F.A.A.D.
Dr. Martin Kassir is a double board-certified dermatologist and internist who has practiced in Dallas for fourteen years. His practice specializes in aesthetic dermatology and laser procedures. Eternity Healthcare to Develop a Hand-held Laser Hair Removal Device

PHOENIX & VANCOUVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Eternity Healthcare Inc. (ETAH), a leading medical device and diagnostic company, announced today that it has initiated the research and development, with Asian Developers, to manufacture a Hand-held Laser hair removal device.

Currently the hair removal products on the market, such as no!no!TM, and the PearlTM along with low-end products, only work short-term. The hair comes back within a few days or weeks. With this new technology, the Hand-held Laser hair removal device will become an inexpensive way to get rid of unwanted hair, in the privacy of your own home. The Hand-held laser device works by using a pulse of light directly at a hair follicle, destroying it at the roots; this in turn kills the hair follicle and prevents the hair from growing back.

Dr. Hassan Salari, C.E.O., states that: “Eternity Healthcare Inc. is a medical device company; we are always open to new technologies and ideas in the medical fields.” He went on to state: “The addition of a laser-based hair removal device to our portfolio of products will not only make the Company stronger, but more visible in the healthcare and medical equipment industry.”

In a follow-up blog post, Dr. Mamelak and Dr. Hanson discuss another new laser, the Candela® GentleYag Pro-U. The blog, titled, "Laser Treatment for All Skin Types," explains how the GentleYag Pro-U can be used for laser hair removal on skin types that previously were unable to achieve effective results. The blog goes on to note how this revolutionary new equipment can be used for a multitude of other treatments, including skin tightening, nail fungus treatment, and treatment of ingrown facial hairs known as pseudofolliculitis barbae.

Ultimately, the dermatologists say they hope that with the addition of this new advanced equipment they can reach a wider population of patients and assist them in their unique needs. Drs. Mamelak and Hanson recommend anyone interested in treatment with these lasers to schedule a consultation, noting they can work with each patient to find the treatment that will be most effective.

Cosmedics Putney Beauty Salon Report Summer Surge in Laser Hair Removal

London (PRWEB UK) 21 May 2014

The arrival of summer has led to a surge in interest in laser hair removal for Cosmedics Putney Beauty Salon, which has seen a staggering 131% increase on their website in the four weeks since Easter for relevant pages.

This growth goes beyond normal seasonal fluctuation. While interest in other forms of hair removal such as electrolysis and waxing have also increased significantly, the performance of laser hair removal shows that it is becoming an increasingly attractive option for clients looking their options for hassle-free summer hair removal.

Now Cosmedics Putney Beauty Salon is gearing up for even more enquiries, after announcing a laser hair removal promotion, offering 25% off laser hair removal courses until June 9th. The latest promotion is designed for those considering the benefits of laser hair removal for holidays, as it offers clients a choice of the attractive discount on popular underarm or bikini areas.

Clinic Manager, Ali Goss, explains:

“The offer is ideal for anybody contemplating holidays on the beach. Laser hair removal is a great choice for the summer as it offers incredible long-lasting hair-free results with smooth skin. This means that clients can be free to wear whatever they want without needing to worry about arranging regular waxes or shaving every day on freshly bronzed skin.”

“For those new to having professional hair removal of the bikini area, we do understand that it can be embarrassing and even overwhelming. Our unique ‘Bikini Line Style Guide’ has been put together to show the most popular options, from standard and high bikini to the infamous Hollywood and Brazilian. This is available in our clinic as well as on our websites. Our beauty therapists are happy to advise too, so there’s no need to be nervous or concerned.”

Saving money on laser hair removal does not have to mean compromising on quality or results. Cosmedics’ Putney Beauty Salon is equipped with the advanced Soprano XL machine, which offers good results for all skin/hair colour combinations and can be used on the body or on the face (something that cannot be said of cheaper IPL techniques). The Soprano XL features continuous in-motion sweeping technology and precise wavelengths for fast and efficient results and it is famed for a ‘pain-free’ experience, which is especially valuable in sensitive areas.

Ali continues:

“We do advise clients to start their treatment as early as possible in advance of a holiday to avoid sun exposure on the treated area, although in the case of the bikini and underarms, this is less of a problem as these areas are not exposed.”

“The general rule is to always be diligent with sunscreen and start treatment as soon as you can for maximum benefit. Clients usually see results after the first session, but we advise a course of six to ensure that the maximum amount of hair is treated at the right point in the growth cycle.”

Cosmedics Putney Beauty Salon offers a comprehensive range of the very latest professional hair removal options to suit all possible requirements. As well as laser hair removal, the team also offer advanced use of electrolysis and the ever-popular waxing as well as alkaline facial hair removal wash, a specialist product designed to deal with fine and downy hair on the face.

Since opening in 2012, the Putney beauty salon has regularly introduced new treatment options for its clients. They offer treatments for the face and body too, with top brand facials and advanced skincare technology such as CACI at their exclusive salon at 4 Disraeli Road, Putney, London.

The business is part of Cosmedics Skin Clinics, which was established in 2003 and remains a doctor-owned and managed company offering a full range of cosmetic treatments, including popular wrinkle relaxing injections, dermal fillers and lip enhancement; plus medical treatments including mole removal, thread vein treatment and excessive sweating injections. The company has 5 clinics in London plus one in Bristol.

Inside Kim Kardashian's Pre-Wedding Beauty Prep

05/13/2014 at 04:00 PM EDT

She's rarely out in public with even a hair out of place, so it's no surprise that Kim Kardashian is going all out when it comes to beautifying for her big day.

The bride-to-be has made several visits to Epione of Beverly Hills, a cosmetic laser center where she had previously undergone laser treatments on her breasts. (The process aired on a February episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians.) The center also specializes in Botox and laser hair removal, both of which Kardashian has tried in the past.

As for her famous glow? The reality star likely doesn't have to look much further than her own makeup drawer â€" she has her own line of self-tanning products, Kardashian Sun Kissed.

When it comes to her nails, Kardashian favors neutral and pink colors at Beverly Hills Nail Design, says an insider. "She never goes crazy with colors on her nails. She likes simple and pretty."

And could her blonde mane be making a reappearance for the nuptials? Though she went from blonde back to brunette earlier this year â€" thanks to stylist Tracy Cunningham â€" the 33-year-old was a little wistful post-color. "I'm so annoyed I dyed my hair dark!" she Tweeted in February. "I am missing my light hair!"

No matter her hair color, Kardashian will surely be making heads turn on her wedding day. Her glam squad will likely consist of longtime makeup artists Joyce Bonelli and Mario Dedivanovic (who did her look when she wed Kris Humphries in 2011) as well as hair guru Clyde Haygood.

Get ready, Kanye West â€" your soon-to-be wife is pulling out all the stops!

Mass. Prison Officials To Appeals Court Judge: Inmate Doesn’t Need Sex Change

BOSTON (AP) â€" Massachusetts prison officials on Thursday made another push to overturn a court ruling that would force them to provide a taxpayer-funded sex-change operation to a murder convict with gender-identity disorder.

The inmate has been given a substantial amount of care, including female hormones, laser hair removal and psychotherapy, and doesn’t need the surgery, the Department of Corrections attorney Richard McFarland told the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston.

“The clinician didn’t say you must have this surgery, but that if you want it you can get it,” McFarland said Thursday. Only 5 percent of people diagnosed with the disorder actually undergo sex-assignment surgery, he added.

Michelle Kosilek, born Robert Kosilek, has been in a heated legal battle to get the surgery, which she says is required to relieve the emotional stress caused by the disorder. Kosilek is currently serving a life sentence for killing spouse Cheryl Kosilek in 1990.

In 2012, a federal judge ruled that the department must give Kosilek the surgery.

In January, that decision was reaffirmed by a three-judge panel of the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which said it is a constitutional right to receive medically necessary treatment “even if that treatment strikes some as odd or unorthodox.”

The prisons department appealed and won a rehearing before the full appeals court. Five appeals court judges heard arguments on the matter Thursday and could take months to issue a decision.

The department said in a statement Thursday that it “fully acknowledges the legitimacy of a gender identity disorder diagnosis” but was appealing because of “the court’s significant expansion of the standard for what constitutes adequate care under the Eighth Amendment.”

Multiple doctors have testified that surgery is the only sufficient treatment for Kosilek, who has tried twice to commit suicide while incarcerated. There is no exact amount of how much the state-funded surgery will cost, but it could be up to $50,000.

Kosilek’s lawyer, Joseph Sulman, said the present treatment regime has alleviated “some of her pain, but she still suffers from severe mental anguish that cannot be treated without the surgery.”

The department also argued that housing Kosilek at an all-male facility could raise serious security issues. McFarland said if Kosilek received the surgery, her notoriety could potentially create a dangerous climate for her among other prisoners.

But Judge William Kayatta, Jr. noted the department already houses infamous prisoners, and he said the only reason Kosilek is notorious is because she was “consistently pursuing her rights through the U.S. Constitution.” He also noted the department could someday be required to house an inmate who already had a sex change.

At the close of the hearing, Sulman said, “After all the medical recommendations, if the court reverses their decision, there would never be a prisoner who has a need for this surgery.”

If it loses its appeals, Massachusetts would be the first state to fund sex-reassignment surgery for an inmate.

Anti Aging Clinic, the GTA’s Leading Provider of Anti-Aging Treatments, Announces Top Benefits of the Spectra Laser ...

Toronto, Canada (PRWEB) April 29, 2014

Anti Aging Clinic (AntiAgingClinic.ca), the Greater Toronto Area’s leading hair removal and skin rejuvenating destination of choice, is pleased to announce the top benefits of using the Spectra Laser Peel for skin rejuvenation and improved overall skin tone.

“After the long, brutal winter, most in the Greater Toronto Area are turning their attention to spring and making a clean start. That should include taking a fresh approach to one’s skin care regime,” says Dr. Brian Sieber, founder of Anti Aging Clinic. “It’s no surprise that cold weather can wreak havoc on skin; the bitter temperatures can sap up natural oils on the skin, leaving it dry, as well as leave skin felling windburned and chapped. In addition, dry indoor heat can leave skin feeling even drier.”

Dr. Sieber notes that while we can’t control the seasons or weather, we can take steps to help keep our skin looking and feeling rejuvenated this spring. When it comes to having smoother, younger-looking skin, many traditionally turn to chemical peels. While chemical peels are very popular and effective, some patients can experience facial discomfort.

“A better alternative for those seeking a healthier complexion is the Spectra Laser Peel,” he adds. “Often called the 'Hollywood Peel' because of its popularity among the Hollywood elite, the Spectra Laser Peel is the most advanced and high-tech skin rejuvenation and enhancement treatment.”

Unlike a chemical peel, Dr. Sieber explains, the Spectra Laser Peel isn’t really a ‘peel;’ it’s a two-step carbon-assisted rejuvenation process that uses laser technology to regenerate collagen and create younger, softer, supple skin. The system gently exfoliates the outermost layer of the epidermis (stratum corneum), the outermost layer of skin cells, of approximately 20 to 30 microns of skin. In comparison, a chemical peel only removes approximately five microns, making the Spectra Laser Peel four to five times more effective and with no downtime.

“Safe for all skin types, the Spectra Laser Peel is the gold standard in laser treatments, with patients walking out with glowing, youthful-looking skin,” Dr. Sieber concludes. “The Spectra Laser Peel also reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, diminishes the appearance of acne scars, evens out skin tones, and reverses the effects of sun damage.”

The doctor-supervised Anti Aging Clinic has been the laser hair removal and skin-rejuvenating destination of choice in the Greater Toronto Area since 1997. Some of the services provided by Anti Aging Clinic’s certified and experienced medical technicians include: laser hair removal, laser facials, age spot and pigment removal, acne treatment, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, non-surgical facelifts, massage therapy, Botox and fillers, hypnotherapy, acupuncture, tattoo removal, and body piercings. Anti Aging Clinic’s facilities, located at 1336 Avenue Road in Toronto and 68 Prospect Street in Newmarket, provide state-of-the-art services in a calm and soothing environment. To learn more about Anti Aging Clinic, visit the company’s web site at http://www.AntiAgingClinic.ca. Hair removal decoded

With summer officially here, getting rid of unwanted body hair can be a task. Experts give the lowdown on the various treatments available

As the temperatures begin to scorch, more and more women are opting for sleeveless tops, short dresses, mini skirts and bikinis (for beach vacations). Hence, hair removal forms an important part of a woman's beauty routine this season. There's nothing more embarrassing than unsightly body hair and today, there are a number of choices to opt from â€" such as waxing, threading, shaving, depilatory creams or laser hair removal. Each comes with their own pros and cons, different levels of pain and budget restrictions.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT TECHNIQUE
Dr Sangeeta Amladi, head medical services, Kaya Clinic , says there are a number of hair removal techniques that have been prevalent over the years and work best for different body areas. "Due to the fast growth of hair in the underarms, popular treatments include waxing and shaving. However, shaving causes the hair to grow back thicker, and one would need to wax once almost every 15 days, which is painful and time consuming. Permanent Laser hair reduction is another popular solution which is effective and long-lasting. It is easy, painless, and saves you the trouble of waxing or shaving every few days. As for the arms and legs, depilatory creams, waxing and shaving is popular. These creams are relatively easier to use, and cause no pain. However, they can get messy. Plus the skin is exposed to chemicals more often," she explains. If facing excess unwanted hair, consult a dermatologist as it could be a sign of an underlying hormonal imbalance.

MOISTURISE THE SKIN
Lasers are useful for removing unwanted hair from the face, legs, arms, underarms, bikini line, and other areas. They can selectively target dark, coarse hair while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged, says Tisha Kapur Khurana, beauty expert/ executive director, Bottega di LungaVita. "Those who still prefer waxing and may face redness post treatment, can moisturise with a tea tree or lavender lotion or aloe vera gel as this has a soothing, healing and antibacterial effect. It's good as a solution against undergrowth and you can use it until the redness is minimised. Rubbing ice cubes is a common way of soothing skin. But don't apply them directly on the skin. Those with sensitive skin should avoid sun exposure for at least 24 hours before or after waxing. Ideally soaps, perfumes, or make-up should not be applied to the waxed area for at least 12 hours after waxing. Also, do not shower in the two hours prior to a waxing service for risk of infection as the pores usually open after a shower," says Tisha.

ENSURE THE TECHNICIAN IS TRAINED
Ruth Awungshi, head therapist, The Palms Spa says, "For the bikini area and chin, I recommend electrolysis hair removal as it is eventually permanent. Although the process is more lengthy than laser removal - because the therapist works follicle by follicle- the effect is better. Unwanted hair on the arms can be removed by waxing or laser as it drastically reduces the hair growth rate and leaves the area silky smooth. Hot wax is best on coarser hair on the legs and for small, tricky areas like eyebrows. As for the back, laser or waxing is the best. If one shaves, the hair grows back almost instantly which would leave it prickly." Another popular treatment is the Brazilian bikini wax. "These are quite painful to go through but helps keep the area hygienic and there are ways to combat the cons of this type of a wax. Firstly, one must make sure the technician is well trained in the process. Secondly, always make sure that the technician is wearing gloves. It is vital that they do so, as it could otherwise result in infections in the said area. Lastly, use hard wax as it does not require a waxing strip and leaves your labia area damage free."

Care for chest hair

Chest hair maintenance is a necessary grooming exercise to improve a man’s overall appearance.  Close chest shave and smooth abs shows off more muscle definition. Apart from its aesthetic benefit, less chest hair is cleaner and more hygienic, and discourages accumulation of sweat and grime during exercise

Here are five chest hair removal methods for a well-groomed body.

 Laser Removal

This is a permanent, but more expensive technique. Typically, it requires three to four professional treatments spaced out over a couple months.

Waxing

This method is regarded as the most effective but painful method because it removes hair from the root. It involves applying a strip and a sticky substance to the skin and removing swiftly in the opposite direction of hair growth.

Shaving

This is the simplest method, and covers any area of the body in one go with just a razor and a shave product. For a close shave: shower with warm water, trim particularly long hair, shave in the direction of hair growth and rinse the razor regularly.

Electrical trimming

Electrical trimming provides subtle maintenance and is a perfect hair removal method for beginners.  It does not give a silky smooth finish, but it’s a great in-between option that allows one take gradual steps to avoid a drastic transformation. It allows one to control the length of the chest hair, not simply going from a bear chest to bare chest. It is best for sensitive skin.

Hair removal cream

This works by applying the chosen removal cream across the selected area, and then leaving for 5-10 minutes while the cream ‘dissolves’ the hair protein structure, before removing. Creams can sometimes be a little harsh on sensitive skin. Always test creams on small area of skin before applying to a larger area.

Hair be gone

As the beautiful Vegas weather grows progressively warmer, clothing choices grow progressively scanter. Whether you are in a tank top, shorts, or a bathing suit, the common factor in all looks is how your skin looks and for most people, especially women, the lack of hair on that skin. Nothing is more diminishing to your self-confidence than realizing you forgot to shave your legs, armpits, or even the dreaded bikini line. For men too, a patch of missed facial hair can be cringeworthy.

The question is, how do you go about getting rid of unwanted hair. Is shaving or waxing the best way to go, and what about laser hair removal?

The decision really comes down to you and which commitment, if any, works in your day-to-day life.

Waxing demands organization and patience. Hair needs to be as long as a grain of rice before you set a waxing appointment or it won’t pull up with the wax successfully every time. Some people cannot handle the interim time between the hair surfacing and the hair being long enough to be effectively ripped out.

With wax you have options: hard wax or soft wax. Soft wax requires the use of muslin strips. Hard wax (which I love!) makes for more accuracy; the wax is laid on and the wax person (usually an esthetician) is able to see exactly where it ends up where with soft wax, the strip could cover the wax and its ability to squish into places unseen under the muslin strips. Hard wax also calls for more experience to apply.

If you have the patience for waxing, the European Wax Center (EWC) is fantastic â€" they are all over the Valley and offer a student discount for certain packages (buy a certain service three times and receive the fourth for free). For new customers in general (with a local ID), you are eligible for a free eyebrow, lip, or bikini line wax (any one of the three), or half off of a Brazilian wax if you are feeling brave.

EWC has a four-step process: first estheticians remove any make-up, oil or lotion. Second, they apply a pre-wax oil that makes it so that the wax only adheres to the hair and not the skin providing for a more comfortable experience. Next, they use EWC’s unique fragrance-free hard wax. Lastly, the technician applies the Ingrown Hair Serum which is also available for purchase. The Ingrown Hair Serum is alcohol free â€" meaning it won’t dry out the skin â€" and made with a small amount of glycolic acid to remove any dead skin cells and/or bacteria. It also contains tea tree oil to calm the skin and coffee and berry extract to keep the skin hydrated. EWC recommends visiting for your service every 3-4 weeks for best results.

I definitely suggest not waxing at home unless you are a professional because it is messy, possibly dangerous, and a recipe for disaster.

Shaving is definitely easier, more cost effective and requires less preparation. Grab a razor, shave and a few minutes later you are smooth! Shaving is a daily task where waxing is every 2-4 weeks depending on the area; results of shaving don’t last as long as waxing. Razor burn is always a con of shaving but finding and using the right razor along with great exfoliation can ease that problem. There are cheap razors but also razors with moisture strips and other padded benefits. Try to stay away from fancy razors with three or more blades â€" a simple one or two blade(s) is best.

Bumps on the skin after waxing or shaving could be a combination of things; bumps could be bacteria caught under the skin creating the bump or an ingrown hair looking for a way to grow out.

Razor burn is a common with any kind of shaving. The tell-tale red bumps can be the product of a dull blade, being a little too intense or aggressive with the razor, or even using a soap or shaving cream that does not agree with your skin.

Ingrown hairs grow toward the skin surface but curve back down toward the root when they don’t make it through.

Easy ways to avoid razor burns, razor bumps and ingrown hairs is to shave in the same direction as the hair grown. For example, shave legs from thigh to ankles. Make sure you have a nice clean and sharp razor and rinse the blade between each shave stroke. You can also invest in a thicker shave cream made especially for sensitive skin. Using a good antiseptic or some tea tree oil is a good way to help calm any redness and remove bacteria from the skin. Laser hair removal is an investment. It is definitely the most expensive option but provides permanent results for most people.

The laser kills hair follicles by exposing unwanted hair to bursts of a laser’s light. If you’re interested in laser hair removal, keep in mind that quality treatments don’t often come with tiny price tags. The good news is, the better the quality, the less likely you are to incur any kind of scarring.

For care of smooth skin, make sure to moisturize and to also gently exfoliate on the days you do not shave. For waxing, exfoliate relatively soon before the removal of hair.

SOUTH MIAMI(CBS4) â€" South Miami Police have a warning for business owners about an alarming trend: the theft of expensive laser hair removal machines from spas and salons.

“It is getting worse and worse. These laser machines are not cheap. This is a very big pain for us owners,” said one victim, Daniel Maderal, in an exclusive interview with CBS4’s Peter D’Oench.

South Miami Police released new surveillance tape from January 27th showing three men with hoods on a mission after smashing through the front door of Maderal’s business, Spyros Laser Medspa at 5790 Bird Road.

The three suspects are seen leaving with a $68,000 Candela laser hair removal machine.

Maderal was insured for the theft but lost a week of business.

“It’s very upsetting to work very hard for several months on my business and all of a sudden everything is going right and then one night they take away our laser machine and it is back to square one and you have to reschedule people and start from scratch again,” said Maderal.

“These machines can go anywhere from $40,000 to $120,000 or $130,000,” said South Miami Police Chief Rene Landa. “Our detectives have identified 11 businesses in Miami-Dade and Broward that have been hit with losing these machines as well as lap tops. What’s important is for us to recover these machines. They are stolen. They are registered.”

“We need to follow a lot of leads,” Landa told D’Oench. “This is an open investigation and it will remain so until we recover all of these machines.”

Landa and his detectives are making progress.

He said early Sunday morning, detectives arrested 25-year-old Kelsey Williams of Miami Gardens. Landa said he was one of the three men seen on the surveillance tape from Maderal’s spa. He said Williams has been arrested before on burglary charges.

Williams appeared in bond court on Monday on charges of burglary, grand theft and criminal mischief. His total bond for those three cases was set at $13,500. But he was held without bond because of a previous case. Williams told the Judge he had the money to hire an attorney.

“I’m very alarmed by all the thefts,” said Maderal. “But I am glad that South Miami Police have made an arrest in this difficult case.”

Landa also released a photo of the F-150 truck that the three men were in.

“The other subject that Williams was with owns the truck,” said Landa. “That subject used to work with some of the spas and fixed their machines. So here’s a guy that come in and does work on the machines. He fixes the laser machines. He knows how to work with them and knows how much they are and then comes back at a later time.”

Landa said work by his detectives has paid off.

He took CBS4 inside his property and evidence room and showed two laser hair removal machines that were recovered from thefts in Indian River and Fort Lauderdale. Landa said detectives from those cities would be coming to South Miami to recover those machines.

Landa said there have been similar thefts in Coral Gables, Aventura, Hialeah, Stuart, Indian River and throughout Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.

Landa and Maderal both hope someone will recognize the two suspects in the surveillance video who have not been arrested.

Maderal has an alarm system but said the thieves were in and out of his store in three minutes.

“Turn them in if they know they are,” said Maderal. “If they know who they are, if they recognize them or any markings on them, if they have any suspicions at all, they should call the police and let them know.”

Landa said anyone who can help should call South Miami Police Detective King at (305) 663-6304 or Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at (305) 471-TIPS (8477).
