Laser hair removal VS Tanning - What you should know!

The demand for tanning and removing unsightly hair from our bodies, has increased dramatically in the last decade. However the two don’t go hand in hand and it’s really important to know the risks you take when you've tanned and then get laser hair removal.

Nad’s laser clinic Training Manager, Naz Kafoa states, “It is a false claim that anyone can have a tan (sun or fake tan) whilst having laser treatment on any skin type, as it will deposit more melanin/pigment to the skin which for laser hair removal is not ideal and can lead to skin pigmentation or burn. If tanning was performed 4 weeks prior to laser treatment than it is safe to continue laser treatment.”

So what are our options when there is a demand for both beauty regimes?

1 - A patient needs to wait until their sun tan fades before planning a laser hair removal treatment. It is recommended that you wait 4 weeks before your next treatment to allow your skin colour to resume back to it’s original colour.

2- Don’t be fooled, even a fake tan can cause skin pigmentation when laser hair removal is performed on top of it, ensure you either wash off the fake tan or wait until it fades before having laser hair removal treatments

Top 5 Reasons to get laser hair removal

Party season has arrived, with Christmas drawing near, the lead up to it brings many social events that can catch us unprepared when it comes to looking good. Laser hair removal will help you remove one more task off your "look good list" and maintain it all year long for planned or unplanned events! Here are the top 5 reasons to get laser hair removal!

1. Permanently reduces hair growth: Laser hair removal is the most efficient way to get rid of unwanted hair. It destroys the hair at the root so that over time hair growth is permanently reduced. Be weary of laser clinics that tell you this procedure is permanent, it is not permanent however it permanently reduces and slows down hair growth drastically.

2. Longevity: With laser hair removal, because the hair growth is permanently reduced over time, it means you don't get in between growth as often as you would with shaving. Successful treatment results can last up to 6 months – 1 year with no in between hair growth.

3. Low Maintenance: Laser hair removal is low maintenance. After a completed course, most people only need a maintenance treatment every six months to remove stray or stubborn hairs.

4. Saves Money: Laser hair removal dramatically slows down the growth of your hair. You won't need to continually pay to have the hair removed on a regular basis. So say goodbye to constantly purchasing shaving products!

5. Smooth skin: Unlike other hair removal treatments, laser hair removal reduces the likely hood of ingrown hair. So you can have smoother, bump free skin for much longer!

Nad's laser clinics are located at Castle Hill, Parramatta, Warringah Mall, Burwood, Sydney CBD and coming soon Bondi!

Facts about laser hair removal – Buyer Beware Part 3

Nad's laser clinic therapist ensure that bed covers are changed and laser heads are changed regularly and disinfected. All equipment used is cleaned and disinfected. Laser machines are serviced daily by our trained therapists and assessed regularly by the manufacturer.

3. Do the therapists performing laser hair removal at the clinic have any extra laser safety certification?

There are 3 levels of training for Nad's qualified therapists. They all undergo laser safety training; candela training and we have a designated trainer just for Nad's who performs regular monthly and quarterly reviews.

4. Does the clinic have a well-informed website, offering real client testimonials and facts on laser hair removal?

A website should not only show the latest deals a laser clinic has to offer. It should also include information regarding the treatments on offer and how they are performed. Refreshed client referrals are also a good indication on how often customers come back to the laser clinic.

Facts about laser hair removal – Buyer Beware Part 2

At Nad's we provide our clients with a well-informed, free no obligation consultation. We tailor the laser treatment specifically to the clients needs and we determine the clients skin type according to the Fitzpatrick scale. Then following our strict guidelines, we find the solution to your problem areas and determine which of our medical grade lasers will be suitable for treatment.

Nad's laser clinic
only specialise in hair removal. This is our profession and as the sister company of Nad's waxing product range we are the experts in the field of hair removal and have been a trusted brand for the past 20 years.

With so many laser hair removal clinics on the market today reducing their prices, it's clear they want you in and out with no concern of your safety and progress.

To ensure you're not trapped or worse scarred for life, these are the questions you should be asking when you need a laser hair removal clinic that is right for you!

1. Are my treatments performed at 6-8 week intervals and not sooner?

If a laser hair removal clinic is getting you to come in more frequently than the recommended time, you should be asking why? The most effective time to have laser hair removal is every 6-8 weeks depending on the area treated, this ensures a safe and effective treatment. Beware of laser hair removal clinics that perform treatments earlier as this stimulates hair growth and causes skin damage. You may be paying less per treatment however paying more frequently.

2. Does the clinic specialise in hair removal?

There are laser clinics popping up in every corner! You need to ensure that the clinic you visit doesn't dabble in hair removal. If they offer a bevy of other procedures that are not related to laser hair removal you should reconsider. After all you don't go to a hair dresser for lip injections, much like laser hair removal, stick to the experts in the field.

3. Is laser hair removal safe down there?

It is actually the most common area to be lasered, if the appropriate equipment is used by qualified and highly trained hair removal specialists then the answer is yes, it's safe on a woman's private region.

Laser hair removal under arms results – Hair Free Mission!

I've been eagerly waiting to show you my results for the laser hair removal treatment I got 6 weeks ago. My first treatment for my under arms was on the 27th August 2012, in between now and then I have shaved my underarms only two times, which is a BIG difference in itself compared to shaving my underarms every day of the week.

DIFFERENCES I'VE NOTICED WITH LASER HAIR REMOVAL TREATMENTS:

- skin doesn't look coarse and bumpy
- area of hair growth has dramatically decreased
- sweating has reduced and when sweating no more stench
- skin feels much smoother as a result of not shaving every day
- not a single ingrown hair in 6 weeks
- shower time decreased as I'm not spending time in the shower shaving
BEFORE AFTER
These results reflect the hair growth after 6 weeks and with just 1 laser treatment.

Hair Free Mission – WEEK 1 FEET

Did you know at Nad’s Laser Clinic you could even get your toes and the tops of your feet done!!!

As you can see I don’t grow very thick hair on the tops of my feet but I shave that area at least every 2-3 days, so there is hair visible but scattered.
I’m a big shoe fanatic! (as any girl is) so when I heard that it was possible to get my feet lasered as well of course I took the opportunity! I didn’t feel anything but the heat/cooling combo when the laser was treating the area. As you can see it’s also clearly marked out so there’s no need to go outside of the lines!

BEFORE FIRST LASER HAIR REMOVAL TREATMENT

AFTER MY FIRST WEEK WITH LASER HAIR REMOVAL TREATMENT

So there’s very little growth back after only 1 week, ordinarily I’d have to shave again by now. I’ve deliberately left it so you guys can have a look at what the growth is like however it is ok to shave in between your treatments.

TIP: With regular exfoliation in between your laser treatments, the remaining hairs will drop out!

To keep track of my future results, stay tuned to our blog and our Facebook page!

Laser hair removal for my arms, results are in! - Hair Free Mission!

The results for the first laser hair removal on my arms are in! I have deliberately left the hair to grow back so you could see the difference in hair growth. Overall what's left is that my hair is quite sparse, has definitely thinned out and shaving is not required on a daily basis, rather I found I only shaved once.
My arm hair is not a problem any more and continuing the finallaser treatmentswill ensure the hair on my arms stays away for much longer and stays permanently reduced!
(left image) BEFORE; My arm hair prior to starting laser hair removal. (right image) AFTER; My arm hair after one treatment and going onto my second. Hair is visibly more sparse and weak.

REASONS TO GET LASER HAIR REMOVAL ON YOUR ARMS:

- Smooth skin and hair free arms, laser hair removal is the most efficient way to get rid of unwanted hair
- No more shaving, or ingrown hairs and saves you from spending money on shaving products
- Relatively painless, only a slight burning sensation. Nad's laser clinics machines have a cooling agent to combat heat and pain You can barely see my hair any more in the image, which is a great result for only 2 treatments! I have also had my second treatment on my hands and knuckles.

My hands and knuckles are also going through their second treatment. Hair has visibly become sparser on my hands.

Hair Free Mission – WEEK 1 LEGS

In an attempt not to gross you out, I decided this time I wouldn’t do a before photo of my legs…(they’re seriously hairy!!) So let’s just focus on the results of what laser hair removal treatment can do for people who dislike having to constantly shave their legs OR cover them up because they’re too hairy like mine!

May from Nad’s Laser Clinic in Castle Hill starts to clean and prepare by gridding my legs. (Nad’s laser clinic is also located at Parramatta, Warringah Mall, Burwood and Sydney CBD.)

TIP: You don't need to let your hair grow like you do with waxing before your treatment. You can shave your legs the night before or if you've forgotten your Nad’s laser technician can do it for you during your appointment! Don't be put off if you have skin conditions, Nad’s laser clinics do a FREE Consultation for you prior to your treatment commencing.

So May my laser therapist, starts to work from my ankles up to the very top of my thighs, I've decided to get my full legs done. Some parts of my upper thigh area have very fine patchy blocks of hair that doesn't really bother me but I was given the option to do half, ¾ or a full leg.

I know what you’re all waiting to hear, is it painful to get the legs done? Not at all! But it really depends on your personal pain threshold, so for me I was fine. The legs themselves are totally fine you barely feel anything just that burning plus a quick jolt of cooling as I explained when getting my underarms and arms done. The two areas that are sensitive are your ankles and the backs of your knees but totally bearable and literally last a couple of seconds. You just need to think of the positives! What it’s going to look like once I’ve finished my treatments!!

AFTER FIRST LASER HAIR REMOVAL TREATMENT
Stay tuned to my results for my hair free legs over the next couple of weeks.

AFTER CARE: For any laser treated area this is really important. I was told for all the treatments I’m having that I could expect to see hair growth over the next seven days (from the day I had the treatment done) but that the root of the hair would be dead so I could start to exfoliate my skin gently to remove excess dead skin also the exfoliant is designed to gently remove the dead hair from the follicle as there is no root to push the hair through, it needs to be done manually. This also helps with quicker results as the laser beam doesn’t need to fight through dead skin first before reaching the hair follicle.

To keep track of my results, stay tuned to our blog and our Facebook page!

Laser hair removal for Men – Hair Free Mission for the back!

A little while ago, I wrote an article about “Is your body hair turning women off?” and came to the conclusion that the reason why Men resort to laser hair removal treatment is for hygienic purposes, better muscle definition and because their sport requires them to be hair free

What I missed was the category of men in their 30’s – 40’s who find as they get older, hair just starts to appear out of nowhere!

An odd and I’m sure shocking situation indeed, when you finally think you’re well over the puberty years and you’ve got a good 20 years before you have to start making extra effort to look after your body, it decides to play funny games with you in the form of unwanted hair

So I head out to find if this was actually true and sure enough I didn’t have to look too far before I found a candidate willing to brave the laser myths and finally rid himself of the wonderful patch-work that was his hair on his back.

Meet Joe! 35 years old and ready to rid himself of the nuisance of hair.

May starts to grid the area, carefully determining which areas of the back require laser treatment

Unwanted body hair particularly on the back can be difficult to maintain, hard to reach and this combined with a busy lifestyle, dare I say it…not even the “average Joe blow” can handle it!

Male body hair removal these days is no longer limited to getting your significant other to shave or wax it for you, believe it or not laser hair removal does actually work and Joe’s here to put it to the test!

Patches of hair are spread throughout the entire surface of Joe’s back.

Performing laser hair removal on the back is actually the most common male treatment, other areas include shoulders, chest, the neck and the abdomen area. May starts the laser treatment procedure ensuring all relevant areas are covered.

Tips for Men when getting laser hair removal treatment:

The night before your laser hair removal treatment, shave the area that will be treated
If you’re job requires you to be out in the sun, ensure that you have sunscreen protection for the treated area; Nad’s laser clinic uses Aesthetica skin care  exclusively
After 7 days from the day of your first treatment you can start to exfoliate the treated area

Stay tuned  to Joe’s mission hair free results over the next few weeks!

Nad’s laser clinics are located at Castle Hill, Parramatta, Warringah Mall, Burwood and Sydney CBD.

Facts about laser hair removal – Buyer Beware Part 1

Nowadays, there's a laser clinic opening on almost every corner. Prices may be cheap but the problem with this is that a lot of these self-proclaimed laser clinics aren't fully qualified to treat you and don't specialise in laser hair removal. They want you in and then out!

Nad's laser clinic
only specialises in hair removal. This is our profession and as the sister company of Nad's waxing product range we are the experts in the field of hair removal and have been for the past 20 years.

May at our Castle Hill laser clinic, recording the progress of a client, this is performed on every client visit, to ensure the treatment is performed thoroughly and safely, so on the following treatment energy can be increased for most successful treatment outcome.

So is it worth paying less? You be the judge!
atch the Today Tonight story from 2008 featuring Nadine Ismiel talking about laser hair removal and what to be aware of.

Here are some tips on the questions you should be asking when you need a laser hair removal clinic that is right for you.

1. What are the treatment intervals between treatments?
The recommended time between treatments is 8 weeks for the body and 6 weeks for the face, coming more frequently is not recommended as you will not be ready to have a treatment, this can stimulate hair and cause skin sensitivity.

2. What lasers do you use for hair removal, which one is best for my skin and why?
The laser technician should be able to answer why a particular laser is the best match for you. At Nad's laser clinic we provide you with a FREE consultation taking into account your skin tone, hair texture and the colour of your hair. We have machines that treat all skin types safely and we provide you with a skin analysis during your free consultation.
3. How many laser hair removal treatments have you performed?
This is the best way to gauge a person's experience level. The answer should be at least a few hundred. Our senior laser technicians at Nad's laser clinicsare educated, certified and experienced.

4. Who is going to be doing my treatments, are they qualified and have they undergone laser safety training?
At Nad's laser clinic, our therapists are highly trained. They must pass three levels of training prior to commencing laser treatments on clients and we provide our therapists with ongoing training throughout the year with regular standard reviews, and as new laser technicians join our team they are trained by our designated field trainer completing our training process.
5. How many sessions will I need?
The average person benefits from 10 treatments however results vary from person to person.
6. Can you treat me if I have a tan or tanned recently?
Nad's laser clinics are all about treating clients safely and effectively. We will not treat you if there is any chance of skin damage. Treating tanned skin causes burns and serious skin damage, the only way to treat tanned skin without causing burns is to use such low settings that treatment wouldn't be effective for hair removal.

Does_Laser_Hair_Removal_Hurt

Does_Laser_Hair_Removal_Hurt

One of the main questions asked when people are seeking laser hair removal is whether laser hair removal hurts or not.

This isn’t an easy question to answer unfortunately but if you want a quick response people say it’s about as painful as an elastic band flicking against your skin.

Laser hair removal works in “blasts” so when you’re using an at home laser hair removal device, or getting it done at a clinic, each time the trigger is pressed this is one blast.

What this means is that the pain associated with laser hair removal is not constant as some people seem to think, rather it’s more like two elastic band flicks per second if done quickly.

Much of course depends on your own pain tolerance. To some people if you’re used to pain laser hair removal will not hurt at all; you will barely notice it’s happening!

To others, especially if you’re not used to laser hair removal, you may feel some discomfort. You need to remember that the laser hair removal isn’t damaging your skin, just your hair follicles. So it’s actually a good thing feeling pain; it means it’s working!

Most pain will come post treatment from accidently rubbing the treated area against something. Or forgetting to put cooling gels on the treated area. This sort of pain is more of an annoyance than “pain” in the traditional sense.

Luckily there are loads of things you can do if you find that the pain of laser hair removal is too much. These methods should reduce laser hair removal pain by loads. Firstly most devices have various intensity settings.

So if you’re finding things too painful you can turn the intensity down from 4 to 3. This will mean the treatment is less effective and will take longer to do, but you should also be able to get used to that level of discomfort. Therefore you eventually can go back up to level 4, or even level 5.

All good laser hair removal systems at a clinic should have these settings.

Laser hair removal numbing cream is also an option. This can reduce pain by up to 40-60%. All good clinics should have this on offer if you request it and you can also buy it yourself for home systems. We recommend Dr Numb.

I know it’s hard to do but try not to think about the treatment you’re receiving. Keep your mind off it. Just have a similar frame of mind like you would if you were having a massage, or shaving with a razor.

A lot of the pain can be mental. You wouldn’t think getting flicked by an elastic band was unbearable would you? That’s because you know it’s not damaging you in any way. Neither is laser hair removal (apart from your hair follicles!)

In conclusion we can say that laser hair removal does hurt a bit but in no way is it unbearable and there are loads of ways to reduce pain so it’s at a very comfortable level. We think that the pain associated with it are well worth the results. The question you need to ask yourself is does laser hair removal hurt so much that I won’t get it done?

Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?

One of the main questions asked when people are seeking laser hair removal is whether laser hair removal hurts or not.

This isn’t an easy question to answer unfortunately but if you want a quick response people say it’s about as painful as an elastic band flicking against your skin.

Laser hair removal works in “blasts” so when you’re using an at home laser hair removal device, or getting it done at a clinic, each time the trigger is pressed this is one blast.

Electrolysis vs Laser Hair Removal

Which is best for me? What advantages does one have over the other? These are some of the questions I will answer in this article so you can decide which is best for you.

Hopefully I have fully answered the question what is laser hair removal on this site already. But for those of you who don’t fully know it can be described as this: Laser hair removal devices identify a hair in the skin by targeting the dark hair pigments and then destroy / damage the hair follicle with intense heat so it won’t produce hair.

It can do this to an area or section of skin therefore targeting several follicles at one time. This involves a moderate to small amount of pain. Electrolysis on the other hand works by putting an electronic current directly into the hair follicle via a needle which completely destroys the hair follicle. Electrolysis is completely permanent as opposed to laser hair removal which, given enough time, may grow back.

For more information on that point see my is laser hair removal permanent article. Since electrolysis can only treat one follicle at a time and requires a needle, it’s quite a lengthy and painful treatment process.

I think it’s going to be best if I list some of the advantages and disadvantages of laser hair removal and electrolysis so you can make a quick comparison:

Advantages

Convenient – you can have short sessions at clinics (under an hour) or even buy an at home laser hair removal device so you can treat yourself whenever you want.Treats a relatively large area – a laser hair removal device can treat quite a few hair follicles in one go, so doing an area like your legs won’t take forever. Not too painful – laser hair removal doesn’t hurt too much, most people say it hurts as much as an elastic band flicking against your skin. Also most devices have intensity settings, so you can turn the device down if it does hurt.Good results – laser hair removal does damage the hair follicles a lot, so it will take ages (many years) for them to repair themselves and start producing hair again (if they repair at all).

Disadvantages

Cost – Laser hair removal can be very expensive in clinics. Up to $200 per session. However if you buy an at home laser hair removal device you could cut back on costs.Number of treatments required – On average you will need 3-4 hair removal treatments because of the stages of growth hair goes through.Semi permanent - unlike electrolysis laser hair removal isn’t guaranteed to remove your hair forever meaning you may need more treatments.Only works on on light skin with dark hair.

Advantages

Completely permanent – since electrolysis completely destroys each hair follicles it won’t grow back.Cheap sessions – each session won’t cost much, even though you will need quite a few of them. This means you can have manageable sessions for as cheap as $30Works on all – electrolysis will work on everyone regardless of skin or hair color since it directly target the follicle.

Disadvantages

Painful – since the needle is going into your skin, then gives you a shock, it hurts quite a bit!Take a while to do – although you only need to treat each follicle once, only one can be done at a time. It will take ages to treat every single hair follicle on your body!Still can be expensive in the long run – even though one session doesn’t cost much, you will need loads of them, which will add up to quite a lot of money.

When thinking about both options it’s safe to say that laser hair removal will be the more comfortable experience; it’s a much more modern and convenient treatment. But not everyone can have it done.

So in conclusion answering the question which is better; electrolysis or laser hair removal, it can be quite hard. But I would say laser hair removal is better if you have dark hair and light skin, and electrolysis is the default winner if you don’t have a suitable hair / skin type but you want 100% permanent hair removal.

How long does laser hair removal last?

Laser hair removal is sometimes referred to as permanent and semi permanent. We have already established in my article; is laser hair removal permanent, that the hair follicles can repair after some time.

This means that laser hair removal is really semi permanent. It perhaps should be called laser hair reduction. But how long does it last after your have fully treated an area?

Unfortunately it’s really hard to get any degree of certainty when trying to answer this question. I know you wanted a definite answer, like 10 years, but i’m afraid it differers in every single case. It could last forever, it could last a few months.Your skin type does matter, and if you’re a woman then various hormonal fluctuations could make a difference. If your hair is very dark, and your skin is very light then  your long term results are likely to be better.

So keep in mind any representations made in this article are just general estimates, they may not apply to you personally.

Let’s assume that you have had all the necessary treatments for a certain area (from 3-6 treatments depending on the area). At this stage you should have around a 60-90% reduction in body hair on the treated area.

The human body will start to repair itself after a certain amount of time. The hair follicles will repair themselves but in most cases they don’t regrow to the same strength that they were before the treatment. This means that if they do regrow, the hair will be lighter and thinner.

Your hair won’t grow back all of a sudden, so it’s not as if any laser hair removal treatment you previously received will be wasted. Usually there will just be one or two hairs which have repaired themselves over a matter of years. For this reason we reccomend getting a touch up treatment anywhere between 1 and 4 years depending on how the treated area is looking.

If it looks fine then there is obviously no point getting another treatment. But 1 to 4 years is the amount of time it will take after a treatment for the hair to slowly begin regrowing. Even if you waited 10 years and let it all regrow, there would still be much less hair than before.

You should also keep in mind that it’s possible some hair was missed during your treatments due to the hair being in different stages of growth. So hair may have been in a dormant phase while you were having your treatments. This means it may be a good idea to go for a top up session if you see significant hair regrowth. These top up sessions should be done once every two years. But this again depends on how many hairs were missed. If you have a home laser hair removal device you can just give yourself another mini treatment if you see hair growth.

Of course the best method to answer the question of how long does laser hair removal last will be to consult the specialist providing the treatment. They will make a judgement specific to you based on your skin type and numerous other factors.

Laser Hair Removal and Pregnancy

pregnancy and laser hair removal

Due to the increased hormone rate during pregnancy you may see an increased rate of hair growth over most areas. Therefore you could be considering laser hair removal around this time. You obviously want to make sure this is a safe and worthwhile thing to do. In this article we will provide you with general facts and advice on the possible negative effects it could have on you and your baby.

It should be noted that excess hair grown during pregnancy should fall our in the months after pregnancy. It’s not permanent! So you shouldn’t base your decision whether to get laser hair removal solely on temporary hormone changes.

Unfortunately there are very few studies done on laser hair removal during pregnancy. That does partially answer our question really – why take the risk? There is a real lack of information about its effect on unborn babies.

Theoretically it shouldn’t pose a risk because the laser hair removal rays penetrate only a few millimetres under the skin. Also they only target melanin – the dark pigments of hair, so this theoretically shouldn’t do any damage. Furthermore only heat is being used in most devices, not any sort of radiation. But the key point is we can’t say this for sure because of the lack of data.

pregnancy and laser hair removal

If you really must remove hair during pregnancy then focus on the outer areas such as the face, arms and legs. Not areas like the stomach, back and bikini region. The best course of action will be oto wait until after child birth to have laser hair removal.

Most salons will probably refuse to treat you during pregnancy do to insurance reasons, and the unknown factor of potential harm. Be wary of salons who try and push expensive treatments on you while you’re pregnant or clam it’s 100% safe. They simply can’t know this and a salon who clams this won’t have your best interests at heart.

Overall laser hair removal during pregnancy isn’t worth the risk, even if the risk is unknown. If there were several reliable scientific studied which stated “laser hair removal is 100% safe during pregnancy” then our opinions may be different. But even if it was 99% safe would it really be worth the risk to you and your child?

We think in this situation it’s best to air on the side of caution and not get laser hair removal during pregnancy. There are more important things than being completely hairless!
